The first quarter of a new year isn’t just a fresh page on the calendar, it’s your biggest window to set the tone for everything that follows.
Having coached Fortune 500 sales teams for over two decades, I’ve noticed a pattern: the teams that start strong in Q1 don’t just hit targets, they build unstoppable momentum that carries through the entire year.
Today, I’m sharing 3 actions that can give you a decisive edge right out of the gate.
These aren’t ideas pulled from a textbook, they come from real engagements with clients who’ve used them to accelerate deals and exceed expectations.
Let’s get into it.
1. Conduct a Joint Risk Assessment with Your Key Accounts
Before you dive headfirst into pitching new solutions in Q1, sit down with your key accounts and run a joint risk assessment.
Look at risk through multiple lenses – financial, operational, technological, and don’t overlook the personal lens. Is there a fear holding any individual stakeholder back from making a decision?
As one of our clients put it, “Doing this joint assessment will actually help you to identify what truly is stopping the deal so you can take action.”
Here’s the thing most salespeople miss: your customer’s risk is your opportunity in disguise.
When you proactively surface and address potential roadblocks, you clear the path to larger deals and faster closes exactly the kind of early momentum you need in Q1.
2. Discover New Levers for Value Creation
A new year brings fresh budgets and renewed priorities. This is the perfect time to rethink how you create value for your customers.
We often talk about the 1+1 principle in sales.
It’s not just about what you can offer individually, but how you can combine your offerings to create exponential value.
Ask yourself:
→ How can you pair your products or services in ways your customer hasn’t considered?
→ What complementary solutions can you bring to the table that align with their new-year priorities?
When you think creatively about value creation, you transform a simple transaction into a strategic partnership and strategic partners don’t get commoditized.
3. Use Coaching as a Q1 Catalyst
Coaching isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s a critical accelerator for sales performance, and there’s no better time to invest in it than the start of a new year.
As a leader, your role is to be both a mirror and a window for your team.
As a mirror, reflect back their strengths and areas for growth. As a window, open up new possibilities and perspectives they might not see on their own.
Regular, structured coaching sessions help your team members sharpen their skills, overcome obstacles, and unlock their full potential.
It’s not about telling them what to do, it’s about asking the right questions that lead to powerful insights and actions.
The teams that invest in coaching early in the year don’t just perform better in Q1. They build the habits and the confidence that compound throughout the year.
The Bottom Line
Q1 is your launchpad. Stay focused on surfacing risks, creating value, and developing your people’s capabilities from Day 1.
Remember, success in sales isn’t just about what you do, it’s about how consistently and excellently you do it.
Let’s make 2026 a breakthrough year!
