Recently, three different executives reached out with the same question: “Venkat, are you noticing deals moving slower than usual?”
Truth is, I’m seeing multiple patterns of slowdown across the market.
And chances are, you’re experiencing at least one of them right now.
Let me share what I’m observing in the field.
The Four Types of Deal Paralysis
1. The Vanishing Act
Your champion goes completely silent. One day they’re engaged, the next day it’s radio silence. We’ve all been there – that sinking feeling when emails go unanswered and calls aren’t returned.
2. The Activity Trap
Endless meetings, revised proposals, new stakeholders joining calls – but zero progress toward a decision. It’s like being trapped on a treadmill – exhausting motion with no forward movement.
3. The Reorganization Freeze
Internal restructuring puts everything on hold. Decision-makers are shuffled, priorities shift, and your deal gets caught in organizational quicksand.
4. The 30,000-Foot Syndrome
The pain is real, the need is acknowledged, but nobody’s willing to define the actual project boundaries. Everyone’s still flying at cruising altitude – no one wants to land the plane and get specific.
Sound familiar?
Here’s my battle-tested 4-step process to inject life back into these stalled opportunities:
Step 1: Run a Joint Risk Assessment
This isn’t your typical risk review.
You’re not just cataloging financial or operational risks. Dig deeper into the personal dimension – what individual fears might be holding someone back?
- That CFO who keeps asking for more data? Maybe they’re worried about career impact if this goes sideways.
- The IT director pushing for additional security reviews? Could be they’re protecting themselves from past project failures.
When you surface these hidden concerns together, you transform the customer’s risk into your competitive advantage.
Step 2: Map the Consensus Gaps
Who in the decision committee hasn’t given their blessing yet?
I’ve seen too many deals die because someone assumed unanimous support when key stakeholders were still on the fence.
Identify every person whose “no” could kill the deal, then systematically work to align them. Sometimes it’s as simple as addressing one person’s specific concern that’s been overlooked.
Step 3: Take the Conversation Upstairs
Can your leadership team arrange face-time with their C-suite?
When deals stall at the operational level, executive air cover often provides the breakthrough you need.
A CEO-to-CEO conversation can elevate your project from “nice to have” to “strategic imperative” faster than any presentation deck.
Step 4: Build Your Contingency Playbook
Market downturns happen. Budget freezes are real. External factors will derail deals.
What’s your backup strategy when Plan A hits a wall?
Create scenario plans for different market conditions. Map out alternative pathways to value. Prepare responses for budget cuts or timeline delays.
This proactive planning prevents you from being blindsided when circumstances shift.
These four levers will help you regain momentum and steer stalled deals back toward closure.
The key is acting before the deal flatlines completely.
What’s the biggest deal slowdown you’re facing right now? And which of these four steps could move the needle for you?
