I’ve been thinking about something that keeps every sales leader up at night.
The pressure to close more deals is relentless. Your manager wants results. Your board wants growth. And that target you just hit? It’s now your baseline for next quarter.
Sound familiar?
Here’s the trap most of us fall into: We think speed and trust are enemies. To close faster, we have to push harder, skip steps, and risk burning bridges.
But what if I told you there’s another way?
Your Circle of Control
You can’t change your quota. You can’t slow down the organization’s appetite for growth. But you can control how you operate within these constraints.
Let me share six strategies that have helped my clients close deals faster while actually strengthening customer relationships:
1. Stop Working Alone
Remember the book Who Not How? It’s brilliant for a reason. When you’re under pressure to deliver at speed and scale, your first question shouldn’t be “How do I do this?” It should be “Who can help me do this?”
Look around your organization.
- Who can you orchestrate?
- Who can you bring into the conversation to serve your customers better?
Collaboration isn’t just nice, it’s your competitive advantage.
2. Defend the Right Battles
Here’s something I tell every client: A person who defends everything, defends nothing.
If you’re prioritizing every opportunity, you’re not building momentum – you’re spreading yourself thin.
Qualify ruthlessly. Focus on transformational, multi-year engagements over quick transactions.
Better qualification = faster sales. Every single time.
3. Make AI Your Secret Weapon
AI isn’t coming. It’s here. And if you’re not leveraging it daily, you’re already creating gaps for yourself.
Ask yourself:
- What AI insights can help me articulate customer needs more clearly?
- What repetitive tasks can I automate?
- How can I 10x my productivity?
Done right, this is a genuine game-changer.
4. Lead with Value (Always)
Want to accelerate your pipeline? There’s no more dependable lever than customer value.
Can you create it? Can you build a compelling business case? Can you prove financial justification? Can you provide a roadmap for change?
When customers see clear, quantifiable value, decisions happen faster. Trust me on this one.
5. Think Bigger
Activity is not a proxy for progress.
Being busy with small deals doesn’t mean you’re making meaningful progress. Start thinking about how to create larger deals instead.
How do you map multiple stakeholders?
How do you make it effortless for customers to see your value?
How do you connect your solution to measurable, monetizable results?
These are the questions that separate the top performers from everyone else.
6. Bring Your Whole Firm
A managing partner once told me something I’ll never forget: “Venkat, I want all our partners to bring the firm to the client.”
Are you doing this? Are you leveraging your organization’s full capabilities, or are you selling alone?
Your customers don’t just buy from you, they buy from your entire organization. Make sure they see it.
These six levers have helped countless sales professionals close faster without sacrificing the relationships that matter.
The key is understanding what’s actually within your control and mastering those elements completely.
What’s your biggest challenge right now – speed or trust? Hit reply and let me know.
To your success,
Venkat
