Most sales leaders focus on closing strategies. But the elite performers?
They obsess over what could lose the deal.
This fundamental shift in thinking is what creates the gap between average and extraordinary results.
Through my work coaching sales organizations at Microsoft, SAP, and Workday, I’ve discovered that top-performing leaders possess a rare skill:
They can spot hidden deal-killers and untapped opportunities that fly under everyone else’s radar – all through strategic questioning.
I’m about to share 3 game-changing questions that will help you convert your pipeline into predictable revenue, particularly for those critical deals you need to close this quarter.
Question #1: “Walk me through how your customer determined this timeline.”
Pay close attention to your team’s body language here.
You’ll frequently catch knowing looks or uncomfortable shifts because that deadline isn’t the customer’s genuine requirement – it’s your team’s optimistic projection.
When that date mysteriously aligns with your fiscal calendar, you’re looking at guesswork, not customer-driven urgency.
This question cuts through the wishful thinking and delivers forecast accuracy you can actually trust.
Question #2: “How does this initiative connect to what keeps their CEO awake at night?”
You’re really measuring whether your team has built a bridge from your solution to tangible, measurable business results.
Here’s the reality: if your salespeople can’t make this connection crystal clear, your customer certainly won’t be able to either.
In my experience with C-suite executives at Fortune 500 companies, this question consistently exposes teams that are selling features instead of transformational outcomes.
Question #3: “What are all the ways this deal could slip away from us?”
This is the question that changes everything.
While most reviews chase the positive, this intentionally provocative approach forces your team to face hard truths and surface the obstacles that could derail your success.
Here’s what matters: Sales is fundamentally about risk elimination.
When you deploy these questions, approach them with care. Challenge the situation firmly, but support your people compassionately.
These 3 questions illuminate what’s hiding in plain sight.
Implement them in your next review cycle and prepare to be surprised by what emerges.
Your customer’s biggest challenges are your greatest revenue opportunities.
Identify them before your competition does and you’ll become the trusted advisor they can’t imagine working without.
What’s the one question you ask that completely transforms your sales conversations? I’d love to hear what works in your world.
