A sales leader recently shared a frustration with me during a client engagement:
“My team is exceptional. They’re checking every box and following the playbook, yet our numbers tell a different story. Where do we go from here?”
We began our diagnostic – every sales organization depends on three fundamental metrics: revenue, pipeline, and activity.
The team was highly active, their pipeline appeared robust, but somehow revenue remained elusive.
Our approach: when revenue falls short, step back and examine the pipeline more closely.
We analyzed three dimensions – volume, velocity, and quality.
While volume was healthy, we uncovered issues with velocity, and critically, with pipeline quality.
The real culprit? The qualification rate.
This led us to the next question: what influences qualification rates?
The answer: the caliber of executive conversations your team is conducting.
I introduced them to a prospecting principle I call 30-3-30 – a framework that reveals conversion breakdowns.
Can your representatives capture a prospect’s attention in the first 30 seconds?
Do those 30 seconds earn them 3 additional minutes of dialogue?
Do those 3 minutes create sufficient interest for the prospect to schedule a full 30-minute discovery session?
This is the Connect-Convince-Convert framework in action.
Our investigation revealed the breakdown: while initial connections were happening, and brief exchanges followed, these weren’t converting into meaningful 30-minute commitments.
The diagnosis became clear: a value perception gap. Executive buyers weren’t experiencing enough value to justify continued engagement.
That revelation changed everything.
So, when your sales performance plateaus despite strong fundamentals, ask yourself:
→ What layers need to be peeled back to expose the true issue?
→ Which diagnostic questions will reveal your actual focus area?
→ What is the specific constraint preventing conversion?
As the saying goes: A person who defends everything, defends nothing.
In your sales organization, identify the three specific levers that will drive meaningful improvement and unlock exponential growth.
