I was back in a room I’d walked into a year ago.
Same team. Same office. But the energy this time was completely different, it was buzzing.
Their customer had just come back to them with 15 AI requirements.
You could feel the pride in the room. The leader looked at me, almost beaming, and said: “Venkat, this shows how much they trust us.”
And he was right. It did.
I let that land for a moment. Then I asked my first question.
“Of these 15, which 3 will help your customer achieve their vision one year earlier?”
Silence.
But not defensive silence… thinking silence. The kind where you can almost hear people sorting through their own list in their heads.
I waited. Then I asked the second.
“If the Chairman had to put his name behind just 3, which 3 would they be?”
More silence. Something was shifting in the room. You could feel the posture change.
Then I asked the third.
“What are 3 use cases your customer hasn’t even thought of yet but could create disproportionate momentum for them?”
Heads went down. Notebooks came out. People started talking to each other, not to me.
That’s the moment I live for.
Because here’s what I’ve seen across hundreds of engagements with Fortune 500 teams over the years:
The teams that win in an AI-saturated world are not the ones with the most options.
They are the ones with the clearest thinking.
In a world flooded with possibilities, more is not better.
Better is better.
→ More options does not equal more value.
→ More activity does not equal more impact.
→ Better questions equal better decisions and faster outcomes.
Leaders are not defined by the quality of their answers.
They are defined by the quality of their questions.
Because the right question doesn’t just solve a problem. It reframes how the room sees reality.
Whether you’re navigating a complex deal, an AI transformation, or a strategy review, the discipline of asking better questions is what separates the teams that execute from the teams that merely respond.
So here’s my question for you today:
What’s one question that has completely changed the direction of your thinking, or your team’s?
