A leader running Southeast Asia for one of the world’s largest technology companies once messaged me on a Tuesday afternoon.
His WhatsApp cut straight to it:
“Venkat, we have plenty of pipeline. Plenty of large deals. What we can’t do is predict, forecast, or close them.”
We were on a call within the hour.
Now, here’s where most advisors would dive headfirst into the deals. Pull up the CRM. Audit the opportunities. Stress-test the forecast.
I didn’t.
My first instinct was to look at the people progressing those deals. Not the deals themselves.
Why?
Because after hundreds of Fortune 500 engagements, I’ve come to see one pattern repeat itself again and again:
Pipeline problems are rarely pipeline problems. They’re people problems wearing a pipeline mask.
So instead of auditing opportunities, we audited capability.
We took the live deals on the table and used them as a diagnostic lens.
Each opportunity became a window revealing the quality of thinking, the depth of engagement, and the true competence of the people serving those customers.
What the deals exposed, the risks confirmed.
And what the risks confirmed gave us a precise roadmap to elevate the people working behind them.
Here’s what we did next:
→ We built mitigation plans together, deal by deal.
→ We empowered the team to move with greater clarity and confidence.
→ We gave them the language, the questions, and the conviction to engage their customers differently.
By year-end, the majority of those large deals had crossed the line.
And the leader who sent me that Tuesday afternoon message?
He’s now leading the Pacific.
The lesson I took away from this engagement is one I want to share with you today:
Deal management alone will never be enough.
The real leverage sits at the intersection of three things working in concert:
→ People management.
→ Process management.
→ Opportunity management.
So the next time your pipeline isn’t closing – when the forecast wobbles, when the deals miss, when the team can’t seem to get them over the line, pause before you question the deals.
Don’t ask: “What’s wrong with our deals?”
Ask instead: “What do our deals tell me about my people?”
Because the deals are never the real story. The people are.
