He flew into Singapore with his next move already decided.
He landed with a plan.
Next stop: an Enterprise leadership role. In his mind, it was already decided.
I smiled. Because I already knew we weren’t going to get there.
Here’s the thing, this lead was crushing it. High-performing team. Real customer relationships in a market where most expats never even find the door, let alone walk through it.
So the Enterprise role felt obvious as the next step.
I asked him one question.
“Where do you get your energy?”
His face lit up. “From building up my team. From spending real time with customers.”
I leaned in. “And this Enterprise role, would it give you the same energy?”
The pause told me everything.
“You know what,” he said slowly, “that role has become so inward-focused. I’d rather stay externally focused. I want to stay in my current role.”
Most coaches would have stopped there. Goal clarified, conversation over.
We didn’t.
→ “What would it take to become the first among equals right where you are?”
→ “And how could you share these wins more broadly at regional or global levels?”
That’s when it clicked for him.
“If I ever do need to step into a bigger role, I’ll need sponsors in the system. I’ve been so focused on winning that I haven’t focused on promoting what my team and I are accomplishing.”
30 minutes. One question. A whole new trajectory.
Here’s what I keep seeing with strong leaders:
The most powerful coaching moment isn’t always helping them climb the ladder.
Sometimes it’s helping them see they’re already standing exactly where they need to be and showing them how to become exceptional there.
The question isn’t always “How do I get promoted?”
Sometimes it’s “How do I make my current role impossible to ignore?”
What’s your version of stepping up without moving up?
I help organizations build their next generation of leaders, double or triple their large deals, and build the pipeline that secures their future.
If this resonated, I’d love to hear where you’ve seen this play out in your own team.
