I once watched a sales leader roll out 4 new sales methodologies in 6 months.
His intent was good. His energy was real. His team even nodded along in every session.
But the deals didn’t move.
On paper, it looked like a transformation. In the field, nothing had actually changed.
That’s when it hit me – his team wasn’t resisting the change. They just never had the time to absorb the first one before the second one landed on their desk.
Here’s the thing about organizational change that most leaders miss:
Implementing it fast isn’t the same as implementing it well.
Think about drinking water.
Your body has a natural absorption rate.
Drink faster than that, and you don’t hydrate faster – you choke.
The same is true for your team.
Over the years of coaching sales leaders across Fortune 500 organizations, I’ve noticed something the best ones do differently. It’s a decision their peers rarely make.
They give their team the space to go deep before they go next.
From the outside, that looks like restraint, slower rollouts, and fewer initiatives per quarter.
From the inside, it produces something else entirely… records.
Here’s what that restraint actually creates room for:
1. Absorb Fully, Not Just Once
A concept heard once in a training room isn’t a concept learned. Your team needs repetition, questions, and time before it becomes instinct.
2. Practice in Real Situations, Not Just Training Rooms
Role plays build confidence.
Real customer conversations build capability.
If the only place your team is applying the new methodology is inside a workshop, it will never survive contact with a real deal.
3. Reflect Before the Next Wave Arrives
Every initiative deserves a pause to ask: what’s working, what isn’t, and why?
Skip this step, and you’re not building on the last initiative, you’re burying it under the next one.
The goal was never to be the fastest at change.
It’s to be the most effective at making it stick.
Your change initiatives should move at the speed of your team’s absorption, not the speed of your own execution.
Sometimes the most powerful thing a leader can do is slow the rollout down to accelerate the result.
So I’ll leave you with the same question I ask every leader I coach:
What’s one initiative your team launched that deserved more time to truly land?
