In every workshop I run, I ask salespeople the same question.
“What does active listening really mean to you?”
Most give me the standard answer: pay attention, don’t interrupt, nod your head.
And they’re not wrong. But they’re not complete either.
Because here’s what I’ve observed across years of working with sales teams at Microsoft, SAP, Salesforce, and beyond: the very best performers bring a third layer to their listening that most people never develop.
They don’t just hear with their ears or see with their eyes.
They sense with their intuition.
Intuition is not mystical. It’s not some gift you either have or you don’t. It’s a muscle. And like any muscle, it grows stronger when you train it consistently.
Here are 3 practices that will always serve you well.
1. A Meditation Practice
The mind is constantly racing – deals, deadlines, next steps, follow-ups.
When you meditate, something shifts. You develop the ability to slow down and become intentional rather than reactive.
I call it slowing down to achieve more. There’s an old saying that captures it well: “Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.”
That stillness is what creates space for intuition to speak.
2. Intentional Elevation
Meditation doesn’t just calm the mind. It trains a different kind of seeing.
Over time, you develop what I call elevation – the ability to observe yourself and your customer simultaneously, almost as if from a third-party perspective.
You start to see not just what’s being said, but everything at play: The context, the subtext, and the energy in the room.
This is where intuition becomes a genuine competitive advantage.
3. Daily Reflection
At the end of each day, carve out a few quiet minutes to review your interactions.
Not just the outcomes, the moments:
Where did something feel slightly off?
Where did your gut signal something before your mind could articulate it?
Reflection is your hidden superpower. It reveals patterns, possibilities, and the small adjustments that compound into meaningful growth.
Now here’s how to bring this into your sales culture in a practical way.
After every significant client meeting, I recommend a three-part debrief.
The head — What did you hear, say, and do?
The heart — How do you feel about how it went?
The gut — What did you sense that wasn’t spoken?
This confluence of head, heart, and gut is where the real intelligence lives.
It’s how you catch the blind spots your notes will never surface.
It’s how you understand what a customer couldn’t quite articulate.
It’s how you sense what others in the room missed entirely.
The best salespeople I know aren’t just analytically sharp. They’re deeply attuned: to their customer, to the room, and to themselves.
That attunement is intuition, and it’s trainable.
Questions to ponder:
What might your intuition have been trying to tell you that you didn’t stop to hear?
