I had prepared for weeks for a high-stakes customer meeting.
Every slide. Every talking point. Every number.
And I was about to make the biggest mistake of my career.
I was packed and ready to walk out the door when something made me stop.
I put my bag down, walked back to my desk, and sat with one question – what am I actually missing?
I had spent weeks getting ready to speak. I hadn’t spent a single minute getting ready to listen.
So I made a decision. I would walk into that meeting and lead with curiosity instead of content.
I asked questions. I listened carefully. I let the customer take me somewhere I hadn’t prepared for.
And what they shared in the next 20 minutes – their real concerns, their unstated risks, the things they hadn’t said out loud to anyone.
It reshaped the entire conversation and also changed the outcome.
Here’s what I’ve come to believe after 20+ years of coaching Fortune 500 sales teams:
The best salespeople don’t walk into a room armed with answers. They walk in with better questions.
Preparation isn’t about loading your arsenal.
It’s about creating the space to truly understand what your customer needs – including the things they haven’t yet found the words to say.
Same account. Same offer. A completely different conversation.
And that’s what made all the difference between walking out with “let’s stay in touch” and walking out with a signed deal.
The collateral can wait. Curiosity can’t.
What’s one question that has shifted the direction of a customer conversation for you?
