I was three minutes into a workshop with a Fortune 500 sales team when one question made the entire room go quiet.
“How many of you over-invest with your customers?”
Almost every hand went up.
“Oh yes, we go all in,” they said. “Diagnosis. Demos. POCs. We bring our absolute best.”
I waited for a beat. Then I asked the follow-up.
“And what has your customer done in return?”
That’s when the question marks appeared.
After reviewing over $4 billion in deals across Fortune 500 organizations, here’s the pattern I keep coming back to:
The strongest sales teams aren’t the ones who give the most. They’re the ones who advance deals through reciprocity.
Because when only one side is investing, you’re not building a partnership. You’re building a dependency.
And good customer engagement skills are never a substitute for great selling skills.
Three Things to Get Clear On, Before You Give Again
Before your next diagnosis, demo, or POC, get crystal clear on three things with your customer:
1. What specific outcomes are they expecting from this investment?
2. How will they measure success at the end of it?
3. What will THEY commit to doing if you bring your A-game?
The shift is subtle but powerful.
You move from “Let me prove our value to you” to “Let’s co-create value together.”
You move from being a vendor on trial to being a partner in motion.
You move from hoping for momentum to engineering it.
Every meaningful engagement is a dance of give and gain. When your customer leans in with the same energy, intent, and accountability you bring, the deal doesn’t just progress. It accelerates.
Never do something for nothing.
Where in your current pipeline could you ask for a give that matches your gain?
