A large client asked me how to get their directors promoted to partner level.
I asked them one question but they did not like the answer.
They had already invested in assessments, workshops, and coaching. On paper, it was thorough. They walked me through the entire programme. I listened carefully.
Then I asked,
“How much of this involves your clients?”
There was a long pause.
Then came the pushback.
“That is not how we do development internally.”
“Our clients are too busy for this.”
“We cannot expose our people at that level yet.”
And right there, in those three responses, was the exact reason their directors were not making partners.
Because here is what I see in almost every sales organisation I work with.
Their training prepares people beautifully for colleagues, managers, and internal reviewers except for clients.
The client interface is a completely different stage.
→ The client does not want your rehearsed pitch. They want you to understand their world better than they do.
→ The client does not remember your slides. They remember whether you made them think differently.
→ The client does not care how well you performed in the training room. They care about what happens when you are sitting across from them.
You cannot rehearse your way to that.
And yet, most learning organisations draw the line exactly there.
They prepare their people for every room except the one that matters.
The irony?
The very capabilities being assessed for partner promotion – executive presence, commercial insight, co-creating with clients – are the ones getting zero practice time.
The move from role play to real play is not a small shift.
It is the only shift that matters.
How much of your team’s development is happening in front of customers, and not just in front of a projector?
