After reviewing $4B in deals across Fortune 500 clients, I’ve noticed something that separates one-time wins from lifetime value.
It happens in the final stretch of negotiations.
There’s this tendency to rush: To focus entirely on getting the signature. To celebrate the close and immediately move to the next prospect.
But here’s what gets missed:
The gap between when your customer commits and when they actually realize value.
Think about what just happened in that deal you closed. Your customer committed a significant budget. They got board approval. They put their credibility on the line.
Now they’re sitting there wondering: “When will we actually see these results?”
That gap? That’s where deals either disappear or multiply.
Here’s what changes everything:
Stop viewing deals as transactions. Start viewing them as the beginning of a value realization journey.
When you’re in those final negotiations, yes, close the deal. But also ask yourself:
- What does success look like for them in 90 days? In 6 months? In a year?
- How will they measure value internally?
- What roadmap are we co-creating together to ensure they hit those milestones?
- How does this deal set us up for the next conversation?
Because here’s the secret sauce everyone talks about but few actually implement:
Customer lifetime value.
Not just the size of the first deal. Not just renewal rates. But the entire lifecycle of value creation keeps feeding itself.
Your customer realizes value → They see new opportunities → They expand with you → You help them realize even more value → The cycle continues.
It’s a circular economy, constantly generating revenue for you and business value for them.
I’ve seen this transform sales organizations.
Teams that make this shift don’t just hit quota, they create predictable, sustainable, compounding revenue growth.
So here’s my question for you:
How does your customer articulate their lifetime value with you?
Can they tell that story?
More importantly, can you tell that story?
Remember:
In their success, lies yours.
In your consistency lies their growth.
In your commitment lies their value realization.
The deal is just the beginning.
What comes next is where legendary sales professionals separate themselves from everyone else.
